Norfolk Public Montessori elementary School
Maria Montessori |
Maria Montessori was born on August 31, 1870 in Italy. Her father was a civil servant and her mother was a homemaker. Maria completed technical school at the age of 16, and then went to college to study medicine.
Maria Montessori was the first woman doctor in the history of Italy. She was very interested in working with children. Since she was not trained as an educator, her decisions about working with children was made through observation. Through her observations and trial and error, she developed what became known as the Montessori Method of Education. This method was developed to allow children to be independent and develop at their own pace. The environment is designed to be self correcting and allow the child to work individually and be a self-disciplined learner. The Montessori Method has been implemented all over the world. There are over 5000 Montessori schools in the United States - including those in the public school districts. |
